A yellow dollar icon next to a video means it is earning limited or no ads. The video is still up and can still be watched; fewer advertisers simply want to appear on it. It comes from YouTube's advertiser friendly content guidelines, which are stricter than the rules for what can be posted at all.
The most common reasons
- Strong profanity, especially at the very start of a video or used throughout it.
- Violence or graphic content, including realistic violence in games shown up close.
- Adult or sexual themes, even when nothing explicit is shown.
- Sensitive events, controversial issues or shocking content presented without context.
- Harmful or dangerous acts and drug related content.
- A thumbnail or title that is more shocking than the video itself.
How to keep full ads
- Keep the first moments of the video clean; that part matters most.
- Bleep or cut strong language rather than leaving it in.
- Give sensitive topics context: explain, inform or educate rather than shock.
- Make the title and thumbnail match the video honestly.
- If you think the icon is wrong, request a human review in YouTube Studio.
Catch it before upload
Content Filter AI reviews the whole video for advertiser friendliness before you upload and flags the exact moments that could limit ads, with timestamps and screenshots. That way you can bleep a word or trim a scene during the edit instead of after the video has lost its first days of revenue. It is an AI estimate, not YouTube's ad decision.
